C’était peut être le concert de la décennie ! Black Sabbath et Ozzy Osbourne donnaient leur dernier concert ce soir dans le stade d’Aston Villa au Villa Park, à Birmimgham !
Les débuts à Birmingham
Black Sabbath est né à Birmingham, en Angleterre, une ville industrielle marquée par la grisaille, la pauvreté ouvrière et les bruits d’usine — un cadre parfait pour forger le son lourd et sombre qui allait révolutionner la musique. Le groupe se forme en 1968 sous le nom initial de Earth, avec quatre membres originaires de quartiers populaires :

Tony Iommi (guitare)
Geezer Butler (basse)
Bill Ward (batterie)
Tous viennent de milieux modestes. Tony Iommi, en particulier, travaillait dans une usine où il perdit le bout de deux doigts dans un accident — un événement qui le força à adapter sa manière de jouer de la guitare, développant un son lourd et glissant devenu caractéristique du groupe.
Au départ influencés par le blues et le rock psychédélique, ils changent de nom en Black Sabbath en 1969, s’inspirant d’un film d’horreur italien avec Boris Karloff. Le groupe décide alors de composer une musique aussi sombre et inquiétante que les films d’horreur, un contraste radical avec le rock hippie de l’époque.
En 1970, ils sortent leur premier album, Black Sabbath, enregistré en une journée. Avec des titres comme Black Sabbath (la chanson), marquée par le célèbre triton (le « diabolus in musica »), l’album pose les bases du heavy metal : riffs lents et lourds, atmosphère oppressante, thèmes occultes et existentiel.
Leur deuxième album, Paranoid, sort la même année et les propulse au rang de légendes. Des morceaux comme Iron Man, War Pigs et Paranoid deviennent des classiques.
Et le reste n’est que legende !
